A calf augmentation procedure enhances the lower portion of the leg in patients with naturally thin or undeveloped calves. Often a difficult area to exercise, many patients desire a more shapely leg. A calf augmentation may include implants or fat grafting to contour the calf and offer the body better proportions.
Candidates for Calf Augmentation
If you are unhappy with the size or shape of your calves, you may be a candidate for calf augmentation. This often includes men who have seen successes in exercising the rest of their body but have not had luck strengthening and building the muscle in the calves. Additionally, asymmetry and underdeveloped calves can be caused by infection or trauma. Patients should be in relatively good health, be non-smokers, and have realistic expectations about surgery.
Calves can be shaped with silicone implants or fat from another part of a patient’s body. Both procedures produce a natural and stronger looking calf. Implants are FDA-approved and come in various shapes and sizes to match the proportions of the body. Fat grafting includes taking fat from another part of the body and injecting it into the calf. Some patients choose to combine calf augmentation with liposuction of the knees and ankles to improve the entire shape of the leg. Most often, the incision made for calf implants is made behind the knee and the implants are placed within the muscle. Patients may choose to have the inner calf, outer calf, or both parts of the calf filled out.
Your calves will be swollen and bruised for several days after surgery. You should keep the legs elevated to avoid swelling. Walking may be slightly difficult for several weeks, but most patients are walking normally after about three weeks. Patients should avoid strenuous exercise including running or weight training for up to two months.
