A facelift, also known as a rhytidectomy, can greatly improve the visible signs of aging our faces tend to show over time due to loss of elasticity, thinning of the skin, weight loss, lifestyle, and changes in our bone density.
Candidates for a Facelift
People who look older than they feel may be good candidates for a facelift. Patients who are experiencing sun damage, deepening of wrinkles and lines, jowls, or loose or sagging skin may opt for a facelift to restore youthfulness to their face. A facelift may be performed in conjunction with a brow lift or eyelid surgery to completely rejuvenate the face.
Depending on your unique situation, a facelift may include a traditional facelift, a limited incision facelift, or a neck lift. During a traditional facelift, an incision is made at the hairline near the temples. Fat is removed or redistributed from the face, jowls, and neck while the tissue is repositioned and muscles are lifted. Another incision under the chin can be made to improve the neck.
A limited incision facelift, also referred to as a “mini-facelift,” makes an incision at the temple and around the ear. The results are subtler and a limited incision facelift is a great option for someone with less sagging or relaxed skin.
A neck lift can address loose neck skin, fat under the chin, and sagging jowls. An incision for a neck lift is made in the front of the earlobe and around the ear.
The recovery process depends on the type of facelift performed but is typically around two weeks. Patients may experience swelling, bruising, and excess blood or fluid. Some activities, such as vigorous exercise, alcohol consumption, saunas, or blow-drying your hair may be off-limits for several weeks.
