Liposuction is an extremely popular plastic surgery procedure that removes unwanted fat and reshapes parts of the body resistant to diet and exercise. It is commonly used on the thighs, hips and buttocks, abdomen and waist, upper arms, cheeks, chin and neck, and more. Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure or a replacement for diet and exercise.

Candidates for Liposuction

If you are bothered by sections of unwanted fat that have proven resistant to diet and exercise, you may want to consider liposuction. Ideal candidates for liposuction are within reach of their ideal weight and want to contour and improve specific areas. Patients should have firm, elastic skin with adequate muscle tone. Candidates should be in relatively good health, be non-smokers, and have realistic expectations for surgery.

The Procedure

During a liposuction procedure, tiny incisions are made in the skin and a small tube is inserted to loosen and remove excess fat, similar to a vacuum. Results are apparent as soon as swelling subsides. Though liposuction offers permanent results, it does not prevent future weight gain.

The Recovery

During liposuction recovery, you may be instructed to wear a compression garment on the treatment area to control swelling and compress the skin. Swelling and bruising will subside within a week or two and patients can return to work and normal activities within a few days.
