Muscle Augmentation

Muscle tissue deteriorates over time, often even with exercise. The skin around the muscles begins to loosen, collagen production slows, and tissue softens. Muscle augmentation uses fat transfers to contour the muscles of the body, giving patients a more youthful appearance.

Candidates for Muscle Augmentation

Candidates for muscle augmentation are those experiencing asymmetrical muscle proportions or those who are unhappy with the shape or size of their pectoral muscles, calf muscles, buttocks, arms, or legs. Muscle augmentation is a great way to improve the look and feel of these muscles. Candidates should be in relatively good health, be non-smokers, and have realistic expectations about surgery.

The Procedure

In recent years, plastic surgeons have begun using larger volumes of fat in replace of implants for augmentation and sculpting. Using natural material is often safer than implants and can sculpt and contour more areas like the pectoral muscles, calf muscles, arms, legs, and buttocks. During a muscle augmentation, fat is removed from another part of the body and injected and sculpted into the treatment area. It can take several days for the fat cells to ‘take’ to the body and during this time, some may die. Typically, a treatment area is overfilled to account for this but several muscle augmentation procedures may be necessary to achieve desired results.

The Recovery

Because muscle augmentation uses a patient’s own fat cells, the risk of allergic reaction or rejection is rare. Most patients return to work several days after the procedure, but should refrain from vigorous activity or exercise for several weeks. You may experience swelling or redness. Though results will be visible immediately, final results may take several months.
