Breast reduction surgery, also known as mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes excess breast tissue and skin. A breast reduction reshapes the breasts to be more proportionate with a patient’s body shape and size and alleviates back pain and discomfort.
Candidates for a Breast Reduction
If your large breasts cause you to feel self-conscious or physical pain or discomfort and disrupt your ability to perform certain activities, you are a good candidate for a breast reduction. Patients should be physically healthy, refrain from smoking, have realistic expectations about surgery, and be displeased by the large size of their breasts.
During a breast reduction procedure, excess fat and skin will be removed from both breasts. You may also combine a breast reduction procedure with a breast lift, which can reposition the nipple. After surgery, your breasts will be smaller, more proportionate to your body size, and cause minimal to no discomfort.
Recovery from breast reduction takes about a week. Patients may feel sore and tired and should avoid strenuous exercise and activity for about a month.
