Ear Surgery

Ear surgery, also known as otoplasty or ear pinning, can reposition, resize, or reshape ears. Ear surgery is designed for patients who suffer from protruding ears, large or deformed earlobes, or ears that tip down or are cupped. Bringing a better balance and proportion to the ears or earlobes can transform the face and make a person more attractive and increase self-confidence.

Candidates for Ear Surgery

If the size, shape, or position of your ears bother you, ear surgery may improve your self-confidence and the balance of your face. Children are generally candidates for ear surgery if they are healthy (without chronic ear infections), have enough ear cartilage for correction (usually after the age of 5), and can understand and articulate their feelings about surgery without the coaxing of adults. Adults should be healthy, non-smokers, and have realistic goals for surgery.

The Procedure

Incisions, whenever possible, are made on the back of the ear. If an incision on the front of the ear is necessary, Dr. Nima will place it in the natural fold of the ear so it is hidden. During otoplasty, the rim of the ear and the cartilage is adjusted to reduce the size of the ear and/or reposition the ear.

The Recovery

Patients will experience discomfort and some itching. The ears will be bandaged and bandages should not be removed until your doctor allows. Most patients require a week of downtime before most daily activities can be resumed. Swimming is off limits for at least six weeks to allow the ears to fully heal.
