A neck lift, also known as a lower rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that removes extra skin and defines the neck, giving patients a more youthful profile. Weight loss or gain, sun damage, and genetics cause changes in the neck as we age.
Candidates for a Neck Lift
If you feel your neck doesn’t match your facial contour, a neck lift is a good solution. Patients with excess skin, a double chin, and jowl lines who want to improve the appearance of their profile should consider a neck lift. Candidates should be relatively healthy, be non-smokers, and have realistic expectations about what a neck lift procedure can do.
During a neck lift procedure, an incision is made at the hairline near the sideburns down around the ear. Dr. Nima will sculpt or redistribute fat from the jowls and neck and reposition and tighten the skin, removing any excess. If patients are looking to reduce a “double chin,” a second incision may be made here. A neck lift may be performed in conjunction with a brow lift, eyelid surgery, or other facial rejuvenating procedures.
A bandage may be placed around the neck to minimize swelling and bruising. You may need to keep your head elevated and refrain from twisting your neck for several days. Strenuous activity or heavy lifting should be avoided for several weeks. A neck lift requires less downtime and offers more subtle results than a traditional facelift.
